Wildfires, ICE, and why Compliance doesn’t take a day off.

Hello Compliance Champions,

California has been busy lately. Between wildfire season, rebuilding efforts, and the internet debating whether “half the fires are arson” (spoiler alert: investigators are still investigating), one thing remains absolutely certain:

🔥 Compliance does not take smoke breaks. Not for Fire and not for ICE.

The California Department of Industrial Relations recently reminded contractors — including out-of-state firms rushing in to help with wildfire cleanup and recovery — that California labor laws still apply. Yes, even during emergencies. Yes, even if your crew arrived in trucks with license plates from three states away.

Here’s the big headline: All workers are protected under California labor laws — regardless of immigration status. That means if your worker shows up to rebuild after a fire, they must be paid correctly. Minimum wage. Overtime. Meal breaks. And on Public Works projects? You guessed it — prevailing wage still applies.

And before anyone asks… yes, even if ICE shows up later, California still expects those wages to be paid properly. Compliance law does not come with an “awkward situation” exemption clause.

Bottom line: whether you’re rebuilding neighborhoods or just trying to survive another California fire season, compliance is not optional. It’s your shield against fines, audits, shutdowns, and reputation damage.

At BuildShield Compliance, we help make sure your payroll, prevailing wage reporting, apprenticeship filings, and labor compliance stay fire-proof — even when everything else feels on fire.

Stay safe. Stay compliant. And please don’t start any fires.

Warm regards (but not wildfire warm). Many contractors think they are following compliance regulations right up until they are hit with a fine. For an analysis of your company's compliance process, contact our office for a thirty minute consultation.
