For California public works contractors, renewing DIR registration is essential to remain eligible to bid on, be awarded, and perform covered work. Registration runs on a fiscal-year basis from July 1 through June 30, and contractors may renew for one, two, or three years at $400 per year. If a registration lapses, penalties may apply, including a $400 late-renewal penalty during the grace period or $2,000 in more serious cases. With the DIR website updated on April 3, now is a smart time for contractors to review the renewal process and make sure their registration stays current.

The renewal process is completed through DIR’s online public works portal. Staying on top of renewal deadlines is one of the simplest ways contractors can protect their ability to work on public projects and avoid unnecessary compliance issues.

Missing a renewal deadline can lead to more than a simple administrative setback. Contractors who continue bidding or performing work after their registration expires may face added penalties, and repeat violations can result in disqualification from public works work. Timely renewal helps protect eligibility, reduce risk, and keep operations moving without interruption.
